Norfolk Island Green Parrot Recovery Team
BACKGROUND
The Norfolk Island Green Parrot Recovery Team, formed in June of 2026, plays a critical role in coordinating conservation efforts for the Endangered Norfolk Island Green Parrot (syn. Norfolk Parakeet, Tasman Parakeet), Cyanoramphus cookii.
The Norfolk Island Green Parrot Recovery Team is established in response to an urgent need to clarify the current conservation status of the species, and determine causes of the apparent significant decline in population and lack of observed breeding activity the species is currently experiencing. The purpose of the Recovery Team is to guide, coordinate, and promote the effective recovery of the Norfolk Island Green Parrot, provide strategic, scientific, cultural, and operational advice to support implementation of priority recovery actions, ensure collaboration across partners, and evaluate progress toward species recovery.
Currently, the ‘Norfolk Island Region Threatened Species Recovery Plan’ is the statutory document guiding recovery actions for the species.
ROLE OF THE RECOVERY TEAM
- The primary role of the Norfolk Island Green Parrot Recovery Team is to provide strategic coordination, technical guidance, and oversight of recovery actions for the species over a defined operational period (3 years). To achieve this role, the Recovery Team will:
- Coordinate and support the implementation, review, and refinement of recovery planning documents and associated conservation advice for the Norfolk Island Green Parrot.
- Provide expert advice to relevant land managers, government agencies, and partner organisations on priority recovery actions, threat mitigation, monitoring, and research; Implementation of recovery actions remains the responsibility of relevant land managers, government agencies, and organisations, and is subject to each organisation’s internal governance, statutory obligations, approvals, and available resourcing.
- Facilitate collaboration and information sharing between organisations, individuals involved, and the Norfolk Island community in the conservation and management of the species.
- Encourage and broker the involvement of key stakeholders, including local land managers, conservation NGOs, researchers, and the Norfolk Island community.
- Oversee and support population monitoring, nest-site detection and protection activities, habitat management, captive breeding program potential, translocation feasibility, and research activities relevant to recovery objectives.
- Communicate outcomes, recommendations, and priority actions arising from Recovery Team meetings to partner organisations, decision-makers, and the Norfolk Island community.
- Support the identification of funding opportunities and partnerships to advance recovery actions;Responsibility for securing and allocating funding remains with relevant organisations, and implementation of recovery actions is subject to available funding and resourcing.
- Undertake or coordinate annual reporting on recovery progress, governance, and outcomes, as required for national registration and accountability.
- Review and refine recovery actions in response to monitoring outcomes and emerging evidence, ensuring adaptive management principles are applied.
- Identify funding gaps and prioritise recovery actions for funding.
- Coordinate activities to ensure recovery efforts are complementary and avoid duplication across partner organisations.
